Join the Widecombe Parish Folk Band – Never on a Sunday
We’re forming a new community folk band and invite local musicians to help revive a unique part of Widecombe’s musical heritage.
The band will play music from Rollo Woods’ “Never on a Sunday” collection, featuring traditional folk tunes arranged in four parts. These arrangements are inspired by, and closely reflect, the style of music-making enjoyed by musicians in Widecombe during the late nineteenth century.
This is a rare opportunity to experience and recreate the rich sound of a traditional West Country folk ensemble, bringing together melodies, harmonies and rhythms that would have been familiar to local musicians more than a century ago.
We welcome players of fiddle, flute, whistle, accordion, concertina, clarinet, mandolin, guitar, cello, bass and other suitable instruments. You don’t need to be an expert—just enthusiastic about playing folk music with others and willing to learn.
Whether you’re interested in local history, traditional music, or simply making music in good company, we’d love you to join us.
